September 2020
From the Primary Care Alliance

In most years, summer is a time to take vacation, rest, recharge, and head back into fall refreshed and revitalized. Normally, I would say, “Welcome back” from the traditional summer slowdown period, but summer 2020 has been a most unusual departure from the typical in so many ways, it’s tough to count. Threats to our profession, including to our ability to care for our patients and to our livelihood, ongoing upheaval both professionally and personally for many, and a continuing pandemic have all come together this year to herald unprecedented amounts of change and uncertainty.

And yet, despite all of that – we’ve persevered. We’ve adapted and continue to adjust to the new reality we find ourselves in. Regardless of the path that COVID 19 takes, or the direction of discussions with government, we know change is a fundamental part of the future equation.

To that end, AMA through the
Accelerating Change Transformation Team, has launched a new version of the Physician Champion Network. This network continues its emphasis on health system transformation with an additional focus on leadership development. If you want to drive change in your clinic, PCN, or community, you want to connect with peers facing similar challenges, and you want to learn new leadership skills, I would encourage you to join the network.

I would also like to acknowledge the Alberta College of Family Physicians for their work on the
Heart of Family Medicine campaign. Watch the video, listen to the podcasts, and read the patient stories. In a time when we are surrounded by uncertainty and often negativity, it is encouraging to see something positive that is reflective of the deep contribution made by family doctors in Alberta.

Take care and stay safe,

Dr. Brad Bahler
