Alberta Surgical Wait-Time Initiative (ASI)
What is ASI?
  • ASI is a plan to ensure that by 2023, all Albertans receive scheduled surgeries within clinically appropriate timelines. This initiative will shape the demand for surgery, manage the capacity to deliver surgery, improve the patient journey towards recovery from surgery, and assist providers be more efficient as they help in that journey.

What issues will ASI address?
  • While reducing patient wait times for surgery, ASI strives to: standardize and address the ability of primary care providers to get better access to specialist advice, agree on and implement consistent, standardized clinical pathways for patient conditions, create centralized referrals for specialists, and work from one platform for referrals. ASI reduces re-work for providers making referrals, supports the development of strong partnerships and transitions of care, and improves access to the right services in the community.

How will ASI impact Albertans?
  • For the Albertan on a surgical path, ASI will ensure they receive consistent, evidence based care no matter where they are in Alberta, see an appropriate specialist in the shortest available time, receive surgery within clinically appropriate wait times, and receive appropriate supports pre and post-surgery. Patients will also experience choices about providers, options for care, and exposure to more information via the MyHealth portal.

What are the relevant timelines?
  • As the deliverables in the primary and community set of projects are established, PPCNC will be involved in specific work plans, create opportunities for user engagement, and receive regular reporting from primary care project sponsors.
