AMA's annual Achievement Awards paused until 2021

The AMA recognizes the strong focus on COVID-19 preparations and management during the past six months. This focus has understandably disrupted many other things including nominations for our annual Achievement Awards. The Board has consequently decided to close nominations immediately and will instead announce a special recognition program for 2020. The annual Achievement Awards program will return in 2021.

Community specialist consult report supports care for cardiac patient in emergency

Through Community Information Integration, cardiologist Dr. Steve Tilley can upload his clinic consult reports directly from his electronic medical record to Netcare. And this has made a real difference to providers and patients.

Several months ago Dr. Tilley saw a patient who was referred to him in his community clinic for shortness of breath. It turned out to be a severe aortic stenosis that required surgery. That surgery was scheduled to take place in several months’ time.

Flash forward a few weeks and the patient presents to a rural emergency department with acute onset shortness of breath that was determined to be pulmonary edema. The family doctor covering the emergency department was able to retrieve Dr. Tilley’s consult report from Alberta Netcare, see the diagnosis, read about the planned surgery, contact Dr. Tilley and between them, expedite the valve procedure including a transfer to Edmonton. Dr. Tilley says the sharing of the information was pivotal to the patient’s care.

Do you have patients in rural areas who may be feeling isolated and lonely?

The Rural and Isolated Support Endeavor is a COVID-19 initiative led by the Society of Rural Physicians of Canada Student Committee with the goal to improve mental health of community members who live in rural areas across Canada. With the referral of a physician or via self-referral by emailing RISE at rise.srpc@gmail.com, patients can be matched with a medical student to receive weekly check-ins via phone and social connection. During such stressful times, some companionship can go a long way for many!

Survey Corner

Health care partners and other organizations often seek physician feedback through surveys. This month, the following are available for your consideration and possible participation:

Research study on physician practice patterns in relation to the recently released AB TraceTogether application. Conducted by University of Alberta researchers.

Research study to determine factors distinguishing Canadians who view COVID-19 lockdown measures as vital vs. those who perceive them as violating their rights. Conducted by University of Québec in Montreal.

Editor's note: "Survey Corner" presents survey requests received and reviewed by the AMA, that may be of interest to our members. We will publish new opportunities as we receive them.
