Talking vaccine acceptance with pregnant patients

Earlier this year the CMAJ published the commentary, "Pregnancy, breastfeeding and the SARS-CoV-2 vaccine: an ethics-based framework for shared decision-making," (CMAJ 2021. doi: 10.1503/cmaj.202833; early-released January 27, 2021) which discussed the medical ethics of excluding pregnant and breastfeeding individuals from accessing the COVID-19 vaccine. Its position is that:

"... people who are pregnant (including those trying to conceive) or breastfeeding should be offered the SARS-CoV-2 vaccine on ethical grounds," and that health care providers can use a shared decision-making approach to guide this discussion with patients. (2021)

The authors specify that while existing clinical trials data do not support the safety of the COVID-19 vaccine among pregnant or breastfeeding individuals; they do not confirm that it harms them or their fetus either. Until there is evidence showing harms outweighing benefits, the writers propose that all pregnant or breastfeeding individuals should be given the option of receiving the SARS-CoV-2 vaccine. (2021)

Are you a Med Access EMR user?

There are now close to 400 physicians using Med Access who are fully live on the Community Information Integration/Central Patient Attachment Registry (CII/CPAR), and there are another 150 in progress. In this third article of a five-part series highlighting implementation experience with conformed EMRs, we hear from Dr. Barney Truong, whose clinic is committed to advancing the Patient’s Medical Home model.

One of the first steps to starting this work was implementing processes to clean up his clinic's panel. He says this initial effort has paid off,

“It’s hard to know how to provide services to your patients if you don’t know who your patients are. It allowed us to do things like outreach for routine screening and help limit the duplication of service to our patients."
