Referral and consultation improvements between primary and specialty care

Beginning this summer, changes are coming to referral and consultation processes in Alberta. For the past several months, primary and specialty care champions have been co-designing a number of process and program improvements.

Over the next two years you can expect to see:
  • Launching of a central access and intake program called Alberta FAST (Facilitated Access to Specialized Treatment) in each zone, starting this summer with Urology and Orthopedic Surgery.
  • Co-designed pathways built using standardized processes and stored in a central repository.
  • Specialty advice programs expansion to cover all of Alberta across more specialties.
  • A closed-loop Electronic Referral Solution connecting referring providers, consulting providers, and patients.
Plans are also in place to improve supports for patients while they wait for consultation and/or surgery, as well as increased post-surgical supports.

Information on the improvements will be posted on the AMA-ACTT website as it becomes available. This work is being supported through the Alberta Surgical Initiative.
