Confidence Vote Referendum on the Minister of Health
The Representative Forum held an emergency meeting Saturday, July 18 and, due to our rapidly deteriorating relationship with the provincial government, has requested a Confidence Vote Referendum on the Minister of Health. Over the next week, we are asking Alberta physicians to let their voices be heard.
Voting closes Tuesday, July 28 and is open to all AMA members who are Alberta residents.

CMPA extending annual dues withdrawal to September 1
The Canadian Medical Protective Association will be deferring the withdrawal of annual dues to September 1, 2020, for physicians participating in the Medical Liability Reimbursement early reimbursement process.
Members who participate in the early reimbursement process will receive a separate email directly from the CMPA confirming the September 1 withdrawal date.
The withdrawal date was previously extended by the CMPA to August 1 (see Alberta Health bulletin MED 232). The AMA advocated to the CMPA for a further extension given the technical challenges physicians are experiencing with the application form and concerns related to the unsecured email electronic application submission process. This will provide time for physicians who opt for the more secure mail-in application option to receive their reimbursement before CMPA dues are withdrawn.
We want to thank the CMPA for granting the additional extension to Alberta physicians.

Please note this is applicable only to members emailed regarding remaining allotments.
Physicians have until July 31 to submit claims to use up their remaining Continuing Medical Education balance. As the CME Program was eliminated effective March 31, 2020, due to government's Physician Compensation Framework, CME to be claimed must have been completed on or before March 31, 2020.
Allotments will expire if not used by July 31
We encourage you to submit your CME claim online through the AMA member dashboard (member login required). For further CME related assistance, please email CME@albertadoctors.org or call 780.482.0324, toll-free 1.866.714.5724 (ext. 5324).

New grant and lower corporate tax rate
In late June, the Alberta government announced a new, one-time grant for small and medium-size businesses that had to close or curtail operations under COVID-19 restrictions.
The Small and Medium Enterprise Relaunch Grant gives affected businesses up to $5,000 to help them get up and running again. This is a grant, so it doesn’t need to be repaid. However, it is considered a taxable benefit so you would report the income on your annual tax return. In addition, as part of Alberta’s Recovery Plan, the province reduced its portion of the corporate tax rate to 8% from 10% effective July 1, 2020.
