Equifax in the news

If you’ve seen recent coverage regarding an American lawsuit against Equifax Inc. (USA) and a $671 million settlement, you may be wondering if there are implications for Canadian customers. To the best of our knowledge, Canadians are not party to the settlement.

In 2017, the AMA purchased Equifax credit monitoring and identity theft protection services for members who wished to seek that protection following a data security breach at the AMA. Later that year, Equifax Inc. (USA) announced its own breach. While we have no way to know if any AMA members were among the 16,000 Canadians that Equifax has identified as being exposed in that event, we have inquired if there are implications of which members should be aware. We have been advised that there are none at this time.

We will continue to monitor this issue and let members know if there is any news. With almost daily news reports of cyber-attacks against an increasingly large number of important organizations, we still consider credit monitoring and identity theft insurance to be everyone’s best protection. For those who do not choose to deal with Equifax, TransUnion Canada is your other choice.
