Travel grant distributed to 20 lucky students

In any other year, 20 medical students would be receiving notice that they'd been awarded the ADIUM Student Elective Travel Grant. The grant, which was established to help defray the costs of traveling to complete medical electives, is awarded annually to medical student recipients selected by random draw from entries received.

In 2020, no one was permitted to travel due to the COVID-19 pandemic, so with input from the AMA Committee on Student Affairs, ADIUM has randomly selected 20 AMA student members from the classes of 2021 and 2022 to receive the 2021 grants.

WCB-AB coverage for Suboxone buccal films
(DINs 02502313, 02502321, 02502348 and 02502356)

Due to the significant risk of under or over-dosing when Suboxone is switched between the sublingual and buccal routes of administration, WCB-Alberta will not cover this formulation of Suboxone when prescribed to an injured worker. Health Canada recently released a warning that the tablets and film are not interchangeable and can lead to inadvertent over- or under-dosing.

Payments for sublingual prescriptions of Suboxone will be authorized only for the tablet form, which delivers the medication in a more stable and safer format. Authorization for this medication is usually limited to claims where WCB-AB has accepted responsibility for an opioid use disorder.

For further information, please contact Lauran Chittim at 780-498-3222. WCB-AB's contact center can tell you if the case manager has authorized a specific prescription. Call 780-498-3999 (Edmonton), 403-517-6000 (Calgary) or toll-free within Alberta at 1-866-922-9221. WCB-AB thanks you for helping promote worker safety in relation to these drugs.

Are you an Accuro EMR user?

There are already 123 providers in 21 clinics using Accuro that are fully live, and another 145 in 25 clinics in progress to implement CII/CPAR and connect their clinic EMR to the rest of the health system. This article is the fourth in a series to highlight CII/CPAR implementation experience with the five conformed EMRs.

For primary care providers, you can contribute encounters to the Community Encounter Digest in Netcare and participate in CPAR to send your panels to the registry however, QHR will begin the technical development for eNotifications later this year.

Survey Corner

Health care partners and other organizations often seek physician feedback through surveys. This month, the following is available for your consideration:

Information needs assessment of Alberta primary care providers managing pediatric oncology patients at end of therapy
The purpose of this study is to learn current primary care provider information needs when managing pediatric patients who have completed their oncologic therapies. Study approved by Health Research Ethics Board of Alberta: HREBA.CC-21-0111.

Non-Insured Health Benefits Service Provider experiences with Indigenous mental health and cultural safety
This project seeks to (1) map the demographics of the mental health services providers on the NIHB program and (2) understand provider knowledge and care practices around key issues impacting Indigenous communities. Research peer-reviewed and approved by University of Toronto Ethics Review Board (#00040815). Learn more about eligibility and incentives to participate.
