Screening mammogram result letters to include breast density score

Beginning in October, Alberta’s screening mammogram client result letters will start including a woman’s breast density score. Until now, result letters mentioned breast density, but encouraged women to speak to their health care provider to find out their score. This change allows for more transparency and directly gives women more health information.

Breast density and screening – what to know
Approximately 50% of women aged 50 to 74 have either heterogeneously or extremely dense breasts. Although breast density can be a risk factor, other factors (e.g., sex, age and family history) have a more significant impact on breast cancer risk. Women are encouraged to talk to their health care provider about their breast density score and personal risk. Breast density information for patients is available on screeningforlife.ca.

While supplemental tests may be used on a case-by-case basis to detect breast cancer when dense tissue is present, the evidence on the effectiveness of these tests is evolving. Screening mammograms are still the best way to find breast cancer early. It’s recommended that women aged 50 to 74 continue to have regular screening mammograms regardless of breast density. Visit screeningforlife.ca for more information.

Update from AHS Screen Test about mobile screening services
Earlier this year, Screen Test services were suspended due to COVID-19, resulting in delays in mobile screening visits. Mobile clinic schedules are being updated and clinics will be notified of the revised dates for their respective areas. Screen Test clients who are due or overdue for a screening mammogram will receive a reminder letter about a month before the mobile clinic is visiting their area. Updated schedules will also be available on screeningforlife.ca.
